- 2 cups (500 ml) lukewarm water
- ½ tsp salt
- 1 tbsp white vinegar
- ½ tsp sugar
- 2 teaspoons (7 g) dried yeast
- 3⅓ cups (500 g) plain flour
- ½ teaspoon baking powder
- oil, for deep frying
- ½ cup (125 ml) honey
- ½ cup crushed walnuts
- ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
- Pour lukewarm water into a large bowl and stir in salt, vinegar, sugar and yeast until sugar and yeast dissolve.
- Beating constantly slowly add sifted flour and baking powder and beat until a thick batter forms.
- Cover bowl and set aside in a warm place for 90 minutes, or until dough doubles in size.
- In a large, heavy-based pan, heat oil to 180 degrees Celscius.
- Gather the dough in your hand, squeeze to form and ball and scoop off the dough with a spoon. Place in the hot oil and fry until golden.
- Remove from oil using a slotted metal spoon and drain on kitchen paper.
- Heat honey in a small saucepan over medium heat until it starts frothing. Remove from heat and pour over the cooked loukoumades.
- Sprinkle over walnuts, dust with cinnamon and serve with ice cream.
